September 20th and 21st

A1- World Geography: To start we took a quiz on the two Nystrom Atlas packets (White and Yellow). Today we went over antipodes and degree confluences.  Antipodes are the exact opposite coordinates on the earth surface.  Sometimes it is referred to as “tunneling.”  If you dig a hole in the ground from Utah and come out on the other side of the world, it won’t be in China.  You will end up in the Indian Ocean.  Click on the following link to access a real-time antipode map and play around with it:  Antipode Map

Next we learned about degree confluences.  A degree confluence is where a line of latitude and a line of longitude intersect exactly.  For instance, Utah has 19 degree confluence lines, one of which is in Utah County in Elberta.  We played around with the website:  Degree Confluence Project where people use their GPS to prove they were at a degree confluence location.

We started a PPT on the earth spheres (Atmosphere, Hydrosphere, and Lithosphere).  In this class we ended with the slide on Orographic Lifting.

To finish, we started the video called, “How the Earth was Made” which details how Lithosphere, Atmosphere, and Hydrosphere formed on our planet. This is a good introduction to the Earth System.  17:36

A4- World Wars:  We finished watching Flyboys.  We also watched a short clip of the 100th anniversary celebration of the Lafayette Escadrille.  Students then worked on the Reaction Questions; we discussed those questions and turned them in; students then worked on their Flyboy’s Logo assignment where they design a personalized logo for their own World War I era aircraft. The logo is due on Monday, September 26th.
